A two-storey community building could be up and running on a controversial recreation park by April 2015.

Last night, Wymondham Town Council approved recommendations of the Kings Head Meadow working group, which has been looking into future uses for the meadow site in Wymondham town centre, which is home to the town’s football club and children’s play facilities, but was involved in a row over Asda plans for a new supermarket.

Central among the proposals is the new building with men’s and women’s changing facilities for the football teams and a bar and function facility.

The building will replace the football club’s clubhouse, and will be on town council land, though the council is also looking to acquire part of the meadow site owned by South Norfolk District Council as part of the regeneration project.

The council could also relocate its office to the new facility, which will be open seven days a week, though it may look at other office sites first.

The football club would use the meadow in season from September 1-April 30, but between May 1 and August 30 during the close season the goalposts would be removed to open the meadow for public use.

The option of creating a trust to run the meadow was rejected because of the administration involved and the chance it may not safeguard the meadow from possible development.

  • why did this headline say 'Norfolk's town meadow'? Was this an attempt to somehow make Wymondham obscure and remote? What quaint editing...

  • A triumph for the Independents on Wymondham Town Council. If it had been left up to the Tories Wymondham Football Club would have been playing up and down the aisles in Asda. A new dawn for the people of Wymondham.
