Talented students in Norwich have unveiled their bright new idea – a lighting design which will be used to illuminate the exterior of London’s iconic National Theatre.
The City College Norwich students earned the opportunity after winning the Junior Ready, Steady, Light competition hosted by Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance.
The competition brought together students from six colleges in a challenge to design a temporary light installation that lit a bike rack from opposing sides.
Chris Murphy, Harry Fabb, Emily Walters, Barney Vann-Rogers and Daniel Stothard – who are all Extended Diploma Level 3 Production Arts students – visited the theatre last week, where they spent eight hours working on the design.
19-year-old Chris Murphy, from North Walsham, said: “Designing the lights for the outside of the National Theatre was a great experience and I really enjoyed it.
“It’s not every day you get to stand on the roof of the National Theatre.”
The students were judged on their use of colour and texture in their installation, as well as their health and safety and team working skills.
The judges included Mike Simpson, Technical and Design Director UK at Philips Lighting and part of the team which completed the lighting at the London 2012 Olympics.
Daniel Stothard, 18, from Colton, said: “All of us were really shocked when we found out that we had won the Ready, Steady, Light Competition because we had seen a lot of really great designs during the competition and we didn’t think that ours would be judged the best.
“Having the opportunity to light the National Theatre was the best thing to of happened as it was a great thing to do and has given us some amazing work experience.”
Rich Hill, course leader in Production Arts, City College Norwich, said:
“This has been an invaluable experience for the students that has not only given them the opportunity to publically showcase their lighting designs but has also given them some fantastic work experience.
“The students worked very hard to earn this opportunity and performed to an exceptionally high standard, we are all very proud of their achievements.”
