A celebration of art and artists and an opportunity for people to “have a go” at all things creative is taking place in Norwich this month.
The free Havago Festival is at the Forum on August 18 and 19 and has been organised by Norfolk artists Cordelia “Doo” Spalding and Alison Atkins.
The duo run mobile arts emporium MEANDER, which aims to take art out to wider audiences and which was the inspiration behind the new festival. “We want to promote Norfolk artists and also give people the chance to “have a go,” said Doo.
“The idea is that the Havago Festival will be very interactive. People will be given three Havago tokens and they can then swap them with artists for experiences. It’s a chance to have a go at things you may not have done before.”
There are lots of different artists and organisation involved, and the creative experiences are set to include everything from making puppets with Norwich Puppet Theatre to learning to ice cakes with Ellie’s Cakery to trying different drawing techniques with Norwich University of the Arts (NUA).
One of the festival centrepieces will also be a project to build a model of Norwich Castle from 2p coins. About 15,000 2p coins are needed for the project and all the money raised will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
There will also be pop-up stalls where NUA students will be holding workshops, and in the evening on both days people will also be able to enjoy listening to a music showcase.
Among the many creative people and organisations involved in Havago are: Holkham Forge, Salt Glass Studios, BEAST Collective, Papershaker, BK Frank, Norfolk Youth Orchestra, Slanted Dance, Future Radio, Norwich Arts Centre, The Yarnsmith of Norwich, and Geneality Art. The music acts include: Jodeh, George Can Cover, Nobodaddy, Solana, Tom Conway, and Chad Mason.
Havago is at the Forum, in Norwich, on Monday, August 18 and Tuesday, August 19 from 10am until 8pm on both days.
