A Norwich woman whose husband served for more than 20 years with the Royal Anglian Regiment is urging people to help bring home another former soldier who is in hospital in Thailand.
Stuart Kyffin, 43, suffered catastrophic head injuries in a motorbike crash on October 4 and his loved ones and former comrades are now trying to raise £100,000 to pay for the father-of-three’s medical evacuation to the UK and his ongoing care.
Joanne Keeble’s husband Carl, 50, served with the Royal Anglians for 24 years. Both of them now work at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital – she is a secretary and he is a security officer.
The 46-year-old from Bowthorpe said: “Most people in this region are immensely proud of their affiliation with The Royal Anglian Regiment.
“My husband served with the regiment and we keep in touch with many old friends via social networking and organised reunions.
“We found out that a comrade, Stu Kyffin, who served with the 2nd Royal Anglian and then went on to serve for 10 years in the SAS was involved in an accident in Thailand, where he settled after leaving the forces and is in hospital there. His family are desperately trying to organise a ‘medevac’ back to the UK.
“They have set up a donation page and the appeal is now beginning to gather momentum with old friends doing all they can to raise publicity to help get him home.”
Speaking in Thailand, Mr Kyffin’s brother David, 46, said: “Now is not the time for getting upset and crying. I need to do what I can for Stu now and get him back to the UK.”
Family and friends have rallied round, and the SAS Regimental Association, the Royal Anglian Regimental Association, the Army Benevolent Fund and his civilian employer, Pilgrims Group have raised £27,000 to help the family.
Liverpool-born Mr Kyffin was a sergeant and retired from the SAS in 2005 after serving in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Sierra Leone, the Middle East and Afghanistan.
