A teenager has battled hurdles to be picked to fight for Team GB at the World Martial Arts Games in Canada.
Harvey Horler- Seaton, 15, from Caister, is a student at Sidestrand Hall in Cromer, a school that helps children with a complex range of needs.
He has been practicing karate since he was four years old and has persevered to be selected from hundreds of adults and young people, without disabilities, to compete.
Harvey will be competing at the games in Richmond with 700 other athletes from 30 different countries.
They will be held from September 3-7 and, as the first of their kind, will encompass a martial arts festival with interactive demonstrations.
Harvey’s mother Michelle Seaton described how the school have supported Harvey, who suffers from ADHD as well as reading and writing difficulties, to overcome his anxieties and be an “active member of the school.”
She added Harvey, who is currently a brown belt, is working towards a black belt and hopes to have achieved his goal by next year.
His mother described how Harvey had been chosen last year for the competition but he did not feel confident enough to do it.
This year she said the teenager, who has moved schools many times, has come on leaps and bounds after attending Sidestrand since September.
She said: “They teach in a good way, with hands on, outdoor learning, they build up his strengths.
“He is now going on to year 11 so it’s a shame he receive this kind of attention before, but it’s better late than never.
“They took a risk taking him on, but he has done them proud and he is much happier.”
The family are fundraising for Harvey’s flights, hotel, kit and fees and have reached a total of £2200.
They are £800 away from their £3000 target and have been helped by Green Gate Pub in Caister who hosted a fundraising event on August 1- 3.
Close family friend and previous carer for Harvey, Jayne Bowers, said: “He is a beautiful young man and I know he will come home with some bling round his neck.
“Everybody believes in him.”
