More than 1,000 young people have now found jobs and apprenticeships with companies supporting a pioneering initiative to drive down youth unemployment.
The paid opportunities are all ones that have been pledged by employers to Norwich For Jobs, a campaign launched by city MP Chloe Smith in January last year.
The aim of the two-year drive was to halve the city’s jobless count for 18- to 24-year-olds which was then standing at just over 2,000.
The campaign, supported by Archant, has actively encouraged businesses to invest in young people, connected young people with opportunities to gain skills and employment and focused the collective efforts of the community.
Its success has led to similar projects being launched in other parts of the country and even attracted the attention of a group of visiting Tanzanian MPs.
Miss Smith said: “We are very proud of this achievement but not complacent. Norwich For Jobs has become a movement as much as a project and so we will continue the effort to help more young people get into jobs.
“It’s not about the numbers, it’s about real people taking home a pay packet and gaining experience.”
Julia Nix, district manager for Jobcentre Plus, said: “This is a truly fantastic result and way above our expectation of helping young people into work for which they are very grateful. The continued support that employers and partners have given Norwich For Jobs has been overwhelming.
“There is more to do to ensure we reach the hardest to help young people who are still unemployed.”
One of the latest firms to respond to Norwich For Jobs has been Hudson Architects in Redwell Street, which is taking on its first-ever administration apprentice following an approach by campaign organisers.
Praising the success of Norwich For Jobs, practice manager Sian Davies said the company was currently recruiting for the post.
She said: “We were thinking about expanding our administration team and saw that an apprentice would be a good fit.
“It will be a really good opportunity for them to learn on the job and train them up while they do day release at City College.”
