Norwich Castle Mall boss set to move to intu Chapelfield

A shopping centre manager who was brought in to attract new brands and improve standards is set to leave to take over a rival retail destination.

Paul McCarthy, the current general manager at the Castle Mall in Norwich, has been confirmed as the new boss at intu Chapelfield.

His appointment comes after Davina Tanner, who had been at the helm at Chapelfield for six years, decided to leave intu at the end of May to focus on her external businesses and other interests and opportunities.

Mr McCarthy will start his new role in the near future, in the meantime intu Chapelfield marketing manager Sheridan Smith and operations manager Jo Bates have taken joint responsibility for running the centre with the support of regional centre director Paul Lancaster.

A spokesman for intu Chapelfield said: “intu Properties is pleased to confirm that Paul McCarthy has been appointed General Manager at intu Chapelfield. Paul will be taking up his new post in the near future.”

Mr McCarthy moved to Norfolk in 2009 with his wife. He joined the Castle Mall at the end of 2012 after two years as the centre manager at Freeport Braintree Outlet Shopping Village in Essex. Over the last two years, he has overseen a half a million pound spend on the Castle Mall’s food court and plans to spend £3m over the next three years on lifts and escalators.

Owners InfraRed also announced plans this year to attract six businesses into a new restaurant quarter surrounding the shopping centre’s Timberhill entrance, and won planning permission for a £1m revamp of the Back Of The Inns entrance to the Castle Mall.

Rob Cossey, director at Hark Group, the asset manager for the Castle Mall, said: “We are really sorry to see Paul go and wish him well.

“We will start the recruitment process straight away and will make an announcement in due course.”

He said Mr McCarthy’s forthcoming departure will not alter the plans for the shopping centre.

  • Castle Mall was doomed from the start. Instead of asking stores what size units they required, it was designed without consolation, therefore the units were either too big or too small for many stores. If the original owners had got it right, Chaplefield would of not been needed, but you never build a Mall on guesswork and that's exactly what they did. Comparisons with Anglia Square may be a tad unfair, but they are justified. If Anglia Square or Castle Mall didn't exist, you wouldn't create them, whereas Chapelfield you most certainly would. The only thing that can make money for Castle Mall is turn it into one giant car park.

  • J.R. Hartley - I think thats a bit harsh saying it always looks dull and tired. Granted it doesn't exactly look its best know but it isn't Anglia Square. In interest of debate, what do you think Castle Mall needs to improve? to get back to where it used to be all those years ago. Anyone can answer this question if you want.

  • The Castle Mall is simply Anglia Square with a roof. The Chaplefield Mall is certainly a nicer place to visit. The Castle Mall always looks tired and dull.

  • Finally the Mall management should realise that it has contributed in part to its downfall and has carried out changes which have NOT been brought forward in the best ways. The advertising for the centre should be better and their is not reason for Castle Mall to be a considered a place now where the Intu Chapelfield rejects should go. Discount shops don't have to go but it's units should't all be filled with discount tat shops. Other centre's are able to attract but Castle Mall doesn't and their is always a new poundshop round the corner... A happy medium can be achieved at the centre and it does not take someone with a degree to see that. Just someone who can look at the shopping centre as a whole literally and look back at what it used to be like and how they can bring it back to life by doing better general maintaince to the whole place and striving for the highest of standards and too create a unique and worthwhile shopping experience for the modern day.

  • Well this must be a shock to those envolved. But the Castle Mall still has not improved enough and won't until the right things are done to it to attract higher quality retailers to the centre filling up empty units. The Castle Mall as a place used to be a great place to go and it was so smart when it first opended but like many things it has not been fully maintained plus poorly incorporated additions downgrade the centre. These things are apparent when you look in and out and around the mall. It could be a success story again but if the whole place inside and out is not "Cleaned up" and "repaired" an maintained as a whole properly it will not get back to where it should be.
