Plans for a new pub and restaurant in a Norfolk town have been recommended for approval by planning officers to revive the site of a former electronics factory.

Marston Inns and Taverns has submitted plans for a new 180 seat restaurant and pub at the former Hamlin electronics site in Park Road, Diss after securing outline planning permission for the scheme from South Norfolk Council’s development management committee in January last year.

The latest plans are for the pub to join a 60 bed hotel, off the A1066 opposite Diss Park, measuring 15.5mx12m and sited fronting onto Park Road to the west of the bus station.

The design of the plans has also been amended to accommodate concerns raised by Diss town councillors that the scheme would not fit into the character of the surrounding area.

In September, the town council’s planning committee agreed in principle to the plans, but fears were raised the applicant had not understood the context of the site within the surrounding Park Road area and south end of the town and particularly how it would sit with the neighbouring Norfolk Feather Company and an electricity sub-station.

The councillors were also concerned about the entrance to the site and the preservation of trees at the front of the land.

The entrance, off Park Road, will be shared with whoever builds the hotel at the rear of the 1.55ha brownfield site, next to Diss bus station.

However, the latest plans include the use of decorative bargeboards and splayed eaves to reflect the design of buildings in the surrounding area.

The proposals come after outline plans by Spen Hill Developments- the development arm of supermarket giant Tesco- for a 60 bedroom hotel and restaurant/pub were granted last summer.
