According to The Gazette, joint provisional liquidators have been appointed for Code Red Promotions, which owns Mercy nightclub, Flaunt, Lace and Rocco's, all on Prince of Wales Road.

The notice says the liquidators, Moore Stephens, were appointed under the Insolvency Act on February 15.

It is not yet clear why, or what it will mean for the businesses going forward.

A spokesperson for Norwich City Council said they could not comment, but that, on application of the council to the High Court, the proceedings had started and discussions were ongoing.

Liquidation can be either voluntary or involuntary, with assets of a business often sold to repay creditors.

The four make up a significant part of Norwich nightlife, in an area which is particularly popular with students and visitors to the city.

It is understood that Mercy - which opened in 2003, having previously been a cinema - was closed over the weekend.

Reaction to the news was mixed on social media.

One person said: 'Sure it will be back before you know it.'

Another said: 'Great club I'm sure it will bounce back.'

But one person, commenting on our website, said it was the 'best news I've heard in ages'.

Another said: 'This has to be good news for Prince of Wales Road.'

The nightclub's manager declined to comment.

We contacted Moore Stephens and the company's owners for response over the weekend and on Monday.
