The team behind a once iconic Norfolk retail brand is hoping to help shoppers turn the tables on online retailers after developing a new app capable of alerting them to price changes.
Jonathan and James Butcher, former directors of Hovells the furniture retailer that was based in Norwich before it closed last year, have invested a six-figure sum creating the PagePooch app, which was designed locally by a Norwich-based developer.
The pair thought that if they could develop an app that could get a computer to watch prices for them and then alert them when the price dropped, they could save a lot of money.
Jonathan Butcher said: “It was when Hovells was selling furniture online we found that as we dropped a price we sold loads of that product and had believed that someone or something was monitoring our prices and alerting our customers as soon as the price dropped as we found the response in increased sales was instant. We did some research and found nothing quite like what we had in mind and so we developed PagePooch”.
Users can download a free version of the app, or for 99p upgrade to a ‘pro’ version which can provide specific details of what changes have been made.
The aim is to appeal to two markets: consumers who want to monitor prices, and those interested in specialist websites who need a quick way to be kept abreast of any changes
He added: “Our system sends an email alert or if using the app a notification direct to your smartphone when a change is detected.
“But unlike similar services we believe PagePooch is the ideal app to help those cash-strapped families as it works with most online prices and web pages and not just one and is available for free.
“But with the Pro version it can tell you what has been changed on a web page too.”
“If you are looking to buy a washing machine, it allows you to track the prices – as soon as it changes it will alert you. It works really well with things like Amazon and ebay, who change their prices many times.”
PagePooch can be downloaded for free from the Apple iTunes store or from Google Play and the mobile and desktop versions that work on tablets and desktop computers are available at www.PagePooch.com
