The Comet store in Great Yarmouth is set to close on Monday as hopes fade for rescue deal for the stricken consumer electonics chain.

More than 50 Comet stores are to trade for their final weekend with sales offering at least 50pc off products, except televisions and laptops launched at 54 stores closing between now and early next week.

They are among the 125 store closures already announced by administrator Deloitte in a move expected to result in around 3,000 retail job losses.

The remaining 70 branches are expected to be closed by Christmas unless a buyer can be found.

Comet collapsed into administration last month in what marked one of the biggest high-street casualties since the demise of Woolworths in 2008.

  • So who or what goes in this future empty store... Sad loss of jobs as the economy reported by the chancellor will see little improvement before 2018. ... The times of living on credit the past 20 years ... Has changed to the reality of paying for what you can really afford... The future of lower spendable incomes and less full time jobs will be a hard reality in the next 10 years...for some people..and many businesses.. The high street is under major pressure across the uk on lower profits... And shopping malls units..

  • Expect more bankruptcies, empty shops and failed businesses. Unless business rates are lowered and the man on the street stops having much of his income confiscated by the state, nothing will change.

  • A buyer to be found, not a chance in this economic climate. Business ratesrent and 20% VAT put an end to most high street retailers.
