A new American diner set in the heart of Norfolk has opened its doors to customers.

Businessman Philip Dingle, who owns the adjacent BP fuelling station, has transformed the former Little Chef on the A11 at Besthorpe, near Attleborough into the 40-seater 1950s-era Mr D’s Diner, which is now serving a US-style menu in a retro atmosphere including a Wurlitzer jukebox.

The new venture has helped create up to 20 jobs in the diner and seen the expansion of the fuel-station shop, creating 12 jobs, and additions such as new toilets and rainwater harvesting.

“It’s really settling in,” Mr Dingle said.

“We’ve also doubled the size of the forecourt shop and put in a new BP Wild Bean Cafe franchise in.

“Volumes are already back to 80pc of what they were before we closed.

“While we were closed I took the decision to retain all my staff. It cost me money, but when I opened my doors we were back in business within three hours.”

  • Of course, if it doesn`t work out, the timing could be perfect for conversion to one of Lord Coe`s post-Olympic ice-cream franchises; "Sebcone".

  • We went for a family dinner at Mr D's earlier this week and it was great, the staff were very friendly and the food was excellent – I really liked the music, not too loud and fun to listen to – definitely going back soon

  • Hope it works for the sake of the employment that results, but yet another American-style calorie and cholesterol kitchen!
