Large graffiti has been sprayed across both bus shelters in Mile Cross Road, close to the Lidl supermarket.

The shelter opposite Valpy Avenue, on the supermarket side of the road, was only replaced in the week beginning October 9 but now already looks a mess.

The vandalism has sparked an angry reaction at www.streetlife.com, a sister website of www.eveningnews24.co.uk which allows people to discuss local issues with other people in their neighbourhood.

Streetlife user Stanley C flagged up the vandalism, saying: “The smart new bus shelter and the one opposite situated near to Lidl at Mile Cross Road has already been defaced by some idiot painting on the glass.”

Norwich North MP Chloe Smith replied using her Streetlife account, saying that she would raise the issue with local police at her regular quarterly meeting tomorrow.

Norwich City Council is working with Clear Channel to replace all its bus shelters by summer 2014 and is due to replace the opposite shelter on Mile Cross Road soon.

A city council spokesman said: “The issue of graffiti is not one which, thankfully, Norwich suffers with a great deal. There are, however, persistent pockets of this vandalism, which we have to tackle and this is a drain on already scarce resources.”

The city council has a contract with Clear Channel to repair damage to shelters promptly and ask people to report any problems along with the shelter reference number, painted on the edge of the shelter roof, to Clear Channel on 0800 731 3699.
