Passengers have been evacuated from a bus after it caught fire in Filby.

Fire crews were called to Thrigy Road in the village, near Great Yarmouth, just after 4.30pm today.

A spokesman for Anglian Bus said the driver and 22 passengers were on board when the flames were spotted.

He said: “All the customers and the driver are safe. They all got off when the fire was noticed.

“The bus is now being recovered and will be brought back to our depot in Beccles and we’ll be investigating why it took place.”

Joseph Leathers-Watson was a passenger on the bus. He said: “What happened was passengers at the back of the bus first raised concerns when a strong smell of burning and black smoke coming from the back, the driver Immediately stopped the bus to investigate the rear.”

Mr Leathers-Watson added that the passengers were then evacuated, but within seconds “thick, black smoke” was visible.

The Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Yarmouth and Martham responded to the bus fire. Crews wore breathing apparatus and used CAFS to extinguish the flames.
