A Broads-based museum is appealing to businesses and members of the public to donate goods for an auction to raise funds. All proceeds raised from the July 8 event will go towards funding ongoing work to the Museum of the Broads extensive display of artefacts and memorabilia, which detail the history of the Broads.

Donated items could include anything from household goods to accommodation offerings. Two pledges already received include a trip in a Tiger Moth and dinner for two at The Star Inn in Lessingham.

The museum, located in Stalham Staithe, was started in 1996 to ensure an impressive collection of items showing the history of the Broads was properly conserved, while at the same time recording and illustrating the history of the area.

Curator Nicola Hems said to celebrate the museum's 21st anniversary this year, it was holding a special exhibition titled 'Broadland in Pictures'. 'Broadland's landscape has inspired artists and photographers, locals and visitors, and its iconic images are depicted on paintings, in photographs, in books, on posters, adverts, in holiday brochures, in personal photo albums, on postcards, on souvenirs and in other forms of artwork,' she said. 'The exhibition is colourful and eclectic, and showcases items from the museum's collection, items on loan from local collectors, and work by local artists.'

One of the museum's star attractions is Maria, the fastest racing yacht in the 1800s. She was built from 1825 to 1827 at Brown's boatyard in Great Yarmouth and is a lateener, having a twin masted design known as a lateen rig. Maria was built for John Bellamy Plowman for his daughter, Maria's 21st birthday.

For something a little different, one exhibition lifts the lids on Broads boat toilets, giving interesting facts about the nautical loos.
