Norwich Dragons Hockey Club and Norfolk and Norwich Hindu Cultural Society are celebrating after they scooped community grants.

The funding, awarded by Broadland District Council, has led to success stories for both groups.

The hockey club has been able to afford new shirts for its four youth teams and the Hindu Cultural Society has secured the financial support to hold an Indian cultural event.

Norwich Dragons, awarded a £400 small grant by Broadland, has seen its teams go from strength to strength since they got their new kits.

The children – 40 boys and girls under the age of 12 – proudly wore their new green shirts for the first time during a tournament last month, in which three of the teams finished second and one fourth.

Meanwhile, thanks to a £500 small grant from Broadland, the Hindu Cultural Society’s recent Indian cultural event was the first major community event of its nature to be held in the area.

The programme included Carnatic vocal music, which originates from southern India; Bharatanatyam, an Indian dance; Hindustani classical music, which originates from northern India; and Kathak, a high-energy Indian dance.

Young and aspiring musicians also performed Bollywood and classical music at the event.

Jonathan Emsell, Broadland District Council’s member champion for community engagement, said: “Groups like Norwich Dragons and the Hindu Cultural Society do wonders for the community by encouraging people to be sociable, active and achieve great things. We can only hope to see more
success stories as a result of Broadland’s Community Grants in the future.”
