The bodies of a man and woman with gunshot wounds have been found in gardens at a quiet Cromer close.

Police were called to Compit Hills at 2.50pm after 'concerns were raised' and found the body of a woman, believed to be in her early 40s, in the front garden of a bungalow.

They also soon found the body of a man, believed to be in his late 50s, in a back garden close by.

Officers have sealed off the area and confirmed that the two were 'believed to have died from gunshot wounds'.

Det Supt Peter Hornby, who is leading the enquiry into their deaths, said: 'Whilst I understand this is a very shocking incident for the neighbours of the two people involved, I can reassure them that, at this stage, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.'

Compit Hills, off Roughton Road, is still blocked off by a police car, with a clutch of other emergency vehicles and officers at the scene of the incident.

Residents at the Roughton Road end of the close, which comprises well over 100 properties, are being allowed to get to their homes, but those further into the close are still not able to come or go because the area is sealed off.

A crime scene investigation team has arrived, while an ambulance landed on a field behind the scene, before taking off a few minutes later.

One couple, who did not want to be named, said: 'We heard a shot at about 2.45pm. We really don't know any more than that.'

A woman who lives in a bungalow a few doors down from the scene of the incident, said: 'It's chaos here. There are police cars and ambulances all over the place. We heard a shot, and initially thought it might be someone shooting on the field behind.

'Now we're worried, because we know lots of our neighbours.'
