Messages in bottles have begun a mystery maritime journey from Cromer Pier.
Staff at the Pavilion box office decided to put some souvenirs of the town’s pier and seaside resort into four bottles to find out where the tides and currents took them.
Mike Cutts said they contained leaflets about the summer Seaside Special show, a postcard, sandcastle flag and a crab brooch along with information on the town’s lifeboat.
“It is a bit daft, but we just wanted to find out where they would end up. We have put in a letter saying ‘hello’ in French, German and Dutch - and anyone contacting us is likely to get the freedom of the pier for a day,” he added.
Lifeboat mechanic Paul Watling said the wind and tide conditions were likely to take them north east, where the next landfall was 140 miles away in Den Helder in the Netherlands.
