Around 90 new homes could be built in Norwich city centre after plans to develop a redundant car park were revealed.
Property developers Charles Church are planning to build on the former Aviva car park at Brazen Gate, near the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Queens Road.
The initial plans are for the 90 homes to be a mixture of one and two-bed apartments and townhouses with three or four bedrooms.
A public consultation is starting today, with the initial plans from city architects Fielden & Mawson going on display.
Land manager Oliver Hurlock said: “We really like the site. It’s a city centre brownfield site, so it’s good from the sustainable point of view, but there is no passing traffic so the only people coming to Brazen Gate should be people coming to the development.
“What we are looking at in the early stages is four-storey apartment blocks across the front of the development and three or four-bed townhouses around a decent-sized green space in the middle.”
The 2.8-acre site is expected to be made up of two-thirds apartments and one-third townhouses, and Charles Church – which also developed the former Norfolk and Norwich Hospital site – are hoping to submit plans at the end of February.
Stephen Little, city councillor for the Town Close ward, said of the plans: “As councillors we have been liaising with the architects and are pleased that, at this stage, they seem keen to hear residents’ views.
“We are happy that planning policy, currently to be finally approved, has allocated the site for housing and also that they have specified the need for the site to incorporate a cycle link from Southwell Road to Lakenham Way.”
- The exhibition of the plans is being held between 3.30pm and 8pm today (Wednesday, January 30) at the Alec Bussey Scout Centre, in Rowington Road.
