Beer to be sold at ‘European tax’ prices for one night in three Norwich pubs

Beer will be more than 60p cheaper than usual at three Norwich pubs tomorrow night.

As part of Cask Ale Week The Champion, in Chapel Field Road, The White Horse, in Trowse, and The Cottage, in Silver Road has each won a barrel of beer from Norwich CAMRA as part of the UK Capital of Ale Survey in June.

CAMRA says this is to highlight; the impact tax has on the price of beer, the ‘negative effects’ this high price has on pubs and the hospitality sector in general and the ‘huge difference’ between the amount of tax paid on beer in the UK and in Europe.

To demonstrate this the three pubs will be selling beer at ‘European tax’ prices, the price it would be if we paid the same levels of VAT and duty as typical European countries. Typically this means 60p to £1 less than normal prices in UK pubs.

Pointless - what some european countries pay lower tax on beer is made up with higher tax on other things.In particular most pay more income tax & health insurance.A more accurate way of comparing tax levels is to look at total tax & duty payable, both direct & indirect, on comparable salaries - even then you must factor in other variables like the cost of living & social benefits.
