North Norfolk man Bruce Peck is heading for the highest mountain in the world this weekend, raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of his granddad, whose funeral was taking place today.

Mr Peck, 29, from Aylmerton, hopes to raise at least £1,000 as a result of his 10-day Mount Everest adventure which will see him trek to base camp, at 5,365m above sea level.

Samuel “Bill” and Jean Porter, Mr Peck’s grandparents, both suffered from dementia at the end of their lives. Before retirement, Mr Porter, a second world war veteran, had been a well-known local bus conductor.

“Everyone knows how bad cancer is but dementia is evil too,” said Mr Peck, who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for charity two years ago. “It takes away people’s personality. Towards the end my granddad couldn’t walk or speak much - just jumbled sentences.”
