Norfolk and Norwich Festival is looking for asylum seekers and refugees who would like to share their stories as part of a new performance to be presented this May.
We Meet In Paradise, created by Berlin-based company TheatreFragile, is part of this year’s festival programme and will be performed outside The Forum in Norwich on May 17 and 18.
Described as an interactive show looking at the complex issues of exile, it wants to bring real people’s stories to the centre of the performance.
A version of the show was previously created in Germany, and the production will aim to explore and raise awareness of important issues and celebrate Norwich’s diverse community.
Tanner Barnes, participation and engagement manager at the festival, said: “We are looking for asylum seekers and refugees, support workers, and people who feel impassioned by the migrant crisis.
“We will be creating a performance opportunity that highlights and also brings clarity and community to such an international issue.
“We have been working with organisations including Norwich International Youth Project, New Routes and the British Red Cross.”
She said they were looking for about 10 people to join the professional performers in the cast of what will be a masked performance.
Alongside this, she said they were also looking to record many more people’s thoughts and stories for what would create an “anonymous audio landscape” for the theatre project.
“It is a really exciting opportunity to support work of this nature that is political, that is relevant, that’s current and important now more than ever,” she said.
The finished production will be part of the festival’s free outdoor programme and will be performed outside The Forum at 8.30pm on Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18.
It is free to get involved with the project and the festival can help to cover transport costs.
Anybody who would like to take part, should email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01603 877764.
Norfolk and Norwich Festival runs from May 12 to 28.
