He only picked up a paintbrush for the first time last year but Great Yarmouth resident Daniel McGrath can call himself an artist with the opening of his first solo show.

Mr McGrath, who lives in King Street, will see his work on the walls of a new gallery at The Court Yard in Market Row this week. The exhibition opens tonight.

The 35-year-old, whose colourful abstract paintings are inspired by real life people and events, said: 'I didn't take art at school. I started painting last year and haven't stopped.

'My friend studied art in Norwich but hadn't touched a canvas since she'd finished. One day I was at a boot sale and I picked up a couple of canvases. My friend came around and I said I fancied a bit of painting, why not.

'I couldn't stop from that moment. I'd stay up all night painting.'

Mr McGrath had tried to find work through Ingeus, the Yarmouth recruitment company, but when they saw his artwork convinced him to pursue his new found passion.

The result is the exhibition in Market Row, followed by a show at Great Yarmouth Library in August.
