Unity and collective spirit stretching from City College to Norwich Prison was praised as the final round of judging for this year’s Anglia in Bloom competition came to a close.

Judges toured Mancroft and University wards yesterday.

The Friends of Norwich in Bloom secretary, Julie Brociek-Coulton, said: “It has been a very good year with a lot of community involvement, and businesses have even increased their contribution.

“The way Norwich Prison worked with us and City College, the way everyone has worked together in the face of cutbacks, has all worked really well.”

Inmates of Norwich Prison grew hundreds of plants and flowers which were used for displays and gardens in sheltered housing accommodation.

Mrs Brociek-Coulton added: “Some of the prisoners are looking to get NVQs when they come out, this is a first step on the way for them.”

The chairman of The Friends of Norwich in Bloom, Terry Bane, said: “It has been an amazing year thanks to all the like minded individuals and organisations.”

Mr Bane added he was pleased to have introduced Grapes Hill Community Garden to judges, who will reveal results in September.
