TRAVELLERS have set up camp at a leisure centre.

A group of six caravans have arrived at Total Fitness in Handforth.

The unauthorised encampment was set up on the privately owned land earlier today (May 16).

A spokesperson for Total Fitness said: “Like many businesses with large car parks, we can be an attractive place for travellers to park and must rely on local enforcement authorities for support with enforcement action if required, and the provision of alternative sites.

"We're sorry that this can cause an inconvenience.

"Despite this, we continue to work hard to protect our members and our team members’ experience.

"The Wilmslow club remains fully open with no changes to operation.”

Police have been made aware and Cheshire East Council officers are now working to contact the landowner.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 11.11am on Thursday (May 16), police were made aware of an encampment on Wilmslow Way, Handforth.

"Officers have been paying passing attention to the site."

This comes after a group of six caravans were ordered to leave Leaf Lane Play Area in Winsford by Cheshire Police.

The Travellers departed the park on Thursday morning.

However, Cheshire Police say this is not the same group that has set up camp at Total Fitness.

The leisure centre has been contacted for further information.
