A Norwich man has branded slow-progressing water works on the city outskirts as "ludicrous" after he claimed workers failed to show up and left a tap running.

Steve Williams, who lives in Costessey, says works on Norwich Road between Cabin Road and Gunton Lane, which began on Friday, have caused traffic chaos in the suburb.

But despite the problems, Mr Williams says workers failed to return to the site after two days of work on Friday and Saturday - with no signs around the work site to tell drivers or bus users that the stop was suspended.

He says two signs have been positioned further up the road telling people to take a long diversion around Dereham Road but he says many drivers have not noticed the signs as they joined the road after the signs - meaning they have had to drive all the way to the works and turn around.

Mr Williams said: "There was nobody there on Sunday and no one there today, I don't know what that's all about, it's just lazy.

"You'd have thought they'd have been working hard to fix this given nobody can get anywhere and the buses can't get down there.

"Because they left that tap on wasting all the water. It's washing a load of sand down the street which they'll need to clear up before it goes down the drain too.

"The whole situation is ludicrous."

An Anglian Water spokeswoman confirmed the supplier expected to complete the work by the end of the week.

She said: “We are sorry for any traffic disruption on Norwich Road in Costessey today. We have needed to close the road to repair a burst main in the area.

“Our teams worked over the weekend to fix this as quickly as possible, and they’re now resurfacing the road. We expect this work to be concluded and the road to be reopened by the end of this week.

"We are grateful to customers and road users for their patience while we carry out this essential work and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
