Greater Anglia says ‘sorry’ for blocked toilets on London to Norwich train

Greater Anglia has apologised to passengers and promised to find out why toilets were blocked and there was no running water in basins on a packed train from London to Norwich.

One passenger, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, tweeted his frustration at the situation and has accused the train company of not making enough effort with basic maintenance.

Care minister Mr Lamb had to stand from Liverpool Street to Manningtree on Thursday’s 7pm service.

“I wanted to wash my hands after having a tangerine. One toilet had no water, a second was out of order, a third was out of order, and a fourth was blocked.

“It was disgusting that these basic facilities weren’t working. It’s a basic issue of customer service and public health,” he said.

“It may be an issue of maintenance - they are not giving it enough attention.”

Mr Lamb said several people had answered his tweet and told him Greater Anglia had not responded to their similar complaints.

“I hope it’s not the case that MPs get a better response than other people,” he added.

An Abellio Greater Anglia spokesperson said they would investigate problems on the service.

She added: “We have been working to reduce the number of faults of this type to ensure we can provide customers with the facilities they expect from us. We are also undertaking a heavy maintenance programme followed by a ‘refresh’ of the carriages on the Norwich London trains both of which involve improvements to the on-train toilets.”

The firm welcomed customer feedback and aimed to respond and fully investigate any comments made.

  • I agree with Port Watcher if EMU trains are what they call the ones used by Southern Trains to South coast - you are certainly glad to get off them when you have been sitting for 1hr 45mins! Mr Osborne I have seen Norman Lamb in Standard Class ! There were probably seats in First so he wouldn't have had to stand to Manningtree.

  • Maybe the contractor that is responsible for the cleaning, etc, whoever that is, ought to be made to employ more staff so these jobs are done properly.

  • This toilet problem has been going on for many years and well before Greater Anglia took over. If they fully serviced the trains at Liverpool Street that would help, are the water tanks ever filled up there ? These carriagers might be old, but the ride is better in them than in the electric multiple units often used these days.

  • Instead of wasting money on Norwich In NInety why not spend it usefully on making things more comfortable? At least then people won't be in such a hurry to get there.

  • I'm afraid this isn't unusual and despite reporting it in the past, no one seems to give a hoot, the only difference is that Norman Lamb was on this train, otherwise we wouldn't have heard a thing about it.

  • To be fair the poor people on the GA twitter account tweet back as much as possible despite horrible abuse, if Archant bothered to look they would see that. Cant be a fun job. Maybe Norman Lamb should be asking the question 'why are we running kanckered old trains and not ordering news ones?' - the answer being of course the DfT are idiots and keep stringing this short franchise out for year after year whilst they twiddle their thumbs and survey the massive failures they have made.

  • Poor Norman. If that's what you get in First class imagine what you get in standard class!
