The party season is almost upon us, so what should you wear for this Christmas and New Year? Opt for a 1920s look to bring your evening look bang up to date, says Emma Harrowing.
The 1920s flapper dress that was a festive fashion must-have last year is back - and this time it has bought along its Art Deco friends.
Blame it on the anticipation of next year’s remake of The Great Gatsby if you will, or the fact that a little it of glitz cheers you up when times are though (just as shorter hem lengths or red lipstick did in past recessions) but each season there is always one era that brings out the best vintage inspired attire. This year’s Christmas collections are no exception. In fact, fashion label Biba has dedicated a whole collection of dresses that have all the glitz and glamour of its 1920s predecessors.
Think loose fitting straight cut dresses adorned with sequins, glitter and gems; floor length gowns in metallics, cream, dusty pinks and black sparkle and of course the tailored tuxedo complete with a luxe t-shirt rather than the traditional white shirt.
Even accessories take a nod to the roaring 20s. Neat box bags and clasp clutches are heavily embellished with glitter and gold, heels have peep toes and can be plain satin or made of sparkle, and jewellery is reminiscent of the glory days when you would wear statement pieces to show off our wealth and status.
All this glamour is perfect for Christmas and New Year parties. With a lot of 1920s inspired glamour around there is something to suit every budget, but whatever the price tag it will still make you feel like a million dollars.
