Peter Mitchell, who has steered the retail division at Norwich department store Jarrold for more than a decade, is to take up a new post as managing director of the Holkham Estate. He will begin his new role in January 2018.

The Holkham Estate is aiming to raise its commercial profile following a £3m redevelopment project to convert farm buildings into modern offices.

The Earl of Leicester expressed his delight at the appointment.

He said: 'I am sure Peter is excited by the prospect of applying his impressive track record and skills to a new challenge. We are pleased he has chosen that challenge to be at Holkham where we feel the broad skills he has learnt at Jarrold, and in his earlier career, will equip him to manage our broad set of businesses with care and consideration for the benefit of the family, our employees and the wider community.'

He added: 'Peter [is] a proven force in Norfolk who has done great things for the Jarrold family, the Jarrold department store and the consolidation of that trusted brand in the years he has been with them in Norwich.

'When I spoke with Jarrold's chairman, David Hill, he was hugely generous in his praise of Peter, was very sad to see him go, but pleased he was staying in Norfolk.'

Mr Mitchell joined the department store in 2003, becoming managing director of the retail division in 2004.

In 2011 he was given the over-arching role of group managing director, also taking responsibility for Jarrold Training and St James' Facilities Management.

He also chaired the team which set up Norwich Business Improvement District (BID), which was granted a second five-year term in September.

Jarrold chairman David Hill said: 'I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter for his energy and leadership over the last 14 years as he's been a key part of the development and success of the business during this period, especially championing the continued redevelopment of the retail division.

'We will miss his passion and commitment to the company and wish him every success in the exciting challenges he faces in his new role.'
