Does anyone else feel intimidated?

Tonight I popped round to see my parents. I only live a short distance away but as I had to drop off a bulky item, I decided to drive. On the drive back I noticed a group of about 10 youths on a street corner (this was on the Heartsease Estate). One of the male group members with short cropped blond hair saw me as I was about to drive past and started to glare at me and appeared to walk towards me for daring to drive past his clique.
What his problem was, I wasn't sure. Was it the offensive shade of green of my otherwise ordinary car? Was it that I was playing a David Bowie CD which his extraordinary sense of hearing picked up and that I was "uncool" or "offended him (it was a track from the early '70s)?
Have to admit I felt quite intimidated when I drove past, not so much because of the group but because of the actions of this one person. Why do they feel the need to act like this to residents on the estate? If I knew this group of people were going to be there then I would have chosen a different route home!
I wonder what this guy actually gets out of doing this to motorists? If its a territorial thing then I'll tell him I've lived on the estate a great deal longer than him! (I've lived there for 95-98% of my life!). I wonder that he considers that, if his parents, relatives and/or guardians own property on the estate, that such behaviour may one day indirectly compromise the value of the property, a potential inheritance.
These people do themselves no justice, do they?
Has anyone else felt intimidated whilst going about their business in Norwich.

Yep Matt, sounds like a KWA, Yob. Green and Bowie music is cool.
If persistant call Shop-a-Yob Hotline 01603 212100, even if its reporting it with a description, location / street and incident. It may lead to a picture being built up in Heartease of folk who have the same intimidation. Its a power and ego trip on their part, attention seeking in front of mate, nothing personal, it can be territorial as these guys are so insecure.
If we act in numbers against these little yobs, by reporting them, the Police and Council PCSO's can target them by patroling on their turf. Also contact all your ward councillors for Heartease so this information reaches people in the crome/heartsease community.

Personally I'm fed up with self important juvenilles. My advice, if its a one off let it go. If is is more than once/ a pattern, get it reported, you might be doing someone else a big favour. It doesn't seem like the Bronx, but if folk don't fight back and act appropriately together, these estates can turn nasty over time if 1 or 2 yobs get the delusion they rule the roost.

I'm glad this thread was started by a man in the first place because this issue underlines that men and women alike can feel intimidated by a group of unfriendly looking individuals, and that there is nothing wrong for a man to admit that he feels threatened.
I used to disagree with having my car locked whilst driving in case I had an accident and I was unable to unlock the doors to get out, but now, I lock the doors to keep myself and my children safe, still with the risk that, if we were involved in an accident, we could be trapped.
It's the behaviour and mentality of people nowadays that has makes us feel we're not safe. What a sad world it's become.

Hi like you my parents still live on the Heartsease Estate and feel so worried now that they lock their doors at 4 pm and don't venture out even to their own garden for fear of intimidation.
As they live on a corner property they have had fences kicked, their back door glass broken ,and of course all manner of rubbish thrown in the garden.
I too was brought up on the estate as was my hubby but it is fast becoming very intimidating, but for people like our parents who have been there all their married lives what can they do!
You are right it is intimidating but I for one wouldn't like to challenge them!!! the shame of it is I feel intimidated visiting my aged parents if I should happen to go in the evening.

Maz, I live in Thorpe Marriott, but even before I lived there, when I was growing up, we, as a family, always locked the front door, and I to this day, I lock the door as soon as I've walked in.
Perhaps you feel you shouldn't have to, but it's become necessary because of the climate in which we live.
For the decent folk who live in Heartsease who do no harm to others and just want to enjoy life in the best way they can, it's a sorry state of affairs to be on the receiving end of anti-social behaviour and feel in fear every time they enter or leave their homes.
There is no shame in feeling intimidated. If you feel out of your depth with these people, just walk away, rather than challenge them. It is better to walk away feeling ashamed that you have been intimidated than challenge an individual who has a knife and stabs you, as some 'have a go' heroes have discovered. Your family would rather have you alive and with them; these people are not worth jeopardising that!
