Maggots Maggots are caused by flies being able to lay their eggs on meat etc. If you do get maggots, the only effective way to get rid of them, is to remove them along with the contents of the bin: · tip the contents of the bin into a plastic sack that can be sealed or knotted · after the bin has been empted clean and disinfect it well · place the plastic sack and its contents back into the bin ready for your next collection. If the bag remains sealed the maggots will not be able to escape.
Season has not open yet, don't like the truth bluebottle, Britain is the
only modern country that inflicts a two week wait for their garbage to
be emptied. Its time to say up yours to the pocket fillers, and give
back the maggots to those who cause them.......ie City Hall, just hand them into the reception. Why should we keep the buggers.
Wednesday, August 2 FORTNIGHTLY wheelie bin collections in Hemel Hempstead and the rest of Dacorum could be scrapped.
The move comes after Dacorum Council was bombarded with complaints
about flies, maggots and smells during the hottest July on record and a
campaign here on Hemeltoday has been flooded with emailed complaints.
A proposal that black wheelie bins should be emptied on a weekly
basis when temperatures soar is likely to go before councillors next
month.
Waste development officer Rosemary Stevens said the issue will be discussed at the council's next policy .
Wheelie bin led to maggot infestation - 14/08/2008
A homeowner has had to call in professional cleaners following an infestation of maggots.
Despite the problems originating in her wheelie bin, Karin Mangan's home was invaded by the fly larvae.
The
infestation was so extreme that Ms Mangan was too afraid to let her
children sleep in their bedrooms for fear of the maggots infiltrating
the upper windows.
Ms Mangan told the Wirral Globe how the
larvae had swept through her house and had infested the keyholes,
windows and doors, despite them being shut.
The mother-of-two was saddened when she had to throw away her children's soft toys that the maggots had made their home.
Even the furnishings, such as carpets, were beyond cleaning and had to be discarded.
Ms Mangan is mystified as to how the larvae got into her home and has since called in professional cleaners.
"Our bin is at the other end of the garden. I don't know what made them crawl all the way down to the house," she said.
Boiling water can be used to kill maggots in bins and vinegar can help prevent flies, according to Basset Law

A
SOUTH Shore woman says she is disgusted by Blackpool Council after it
refused to collect her maggot-infested wheelie bin – unless she handed
over cash.
Lesley Nettleship was horrified to find maggots in her bin and rang the council to ask for help. But
instead of rushing to her aid, the council said she could either pay
£13.50 for an extra pick-up or clear the bin out herself. Debate rages on the binsMrs
Nettleship, of Stretton Avenue, South Shore, blames fortnightly
collections for the problem and says it isn't safe to keep the bin
"festering" outside her home until bin men call. She said:
"There's nearly two weeks worth of food waste in it. During the winter
it's not too bad but as soon as it starts getting warmer we have these
problems. It's a disgrace. The rubbish and maggots are just festering. "It's
down to the fortnightly collection. In summer they should go back to
weekly collections, with the warm weather surely this is a health
issue." Mrs Nettleship wanted Blackpool Council to collect the bin for the health and safety of children who live on her street. She added: "It's horrible. There's no way I can touch that bin and I'd have to wait three days for the next collection. "The maggots are all over it. There are little kids who live in my street. It's a health hazard. "My other option was to pay for an extra collection but I've just paid my rates – why should I have to pay more?" A Blackpool Council spokeswoman said: "We are sorry to hear that Ms Nettleship has a problem with her wheeled bin. "A
member of our Recycling Team will be contacting her to offer advice on
how this can be prevented from occurring in the future." Give the maggots back to the town halls/city halls, lets see if the tossers walk out for health and safety.

The truth poor bin managent by these residents, this is last years nonsense and black propaganda, sounds like someone hasn't been following basic guidelines. Whether 7 or 14 day collection, if a resident allows flies to access uncooked meat, you will always get maggots after 2-4 days. So interval is irrelevant unless the collection interval is daily.
Useful tips to avoid maggots and smells from your refuse
wheeled bins
• There are more than 100 authorities in the UK implementing the two
week collection scheme. They all seem to agree that it is the way
forward in refuse collections, as does the Government department
responsible for environmental issues (DEFRA).
• The lid should be kept closed on the bin at all times.
• All food waste, particularly items such as meat and fish, should be
double bagged and effectively closed. The same applies to animal
waste.
• Recycle as much waste as possible to reduce the amount of waste
left in the bin.
• Do not leave waste food exposed inside the home before putting it
in the bin. Flies can lay eggs during that time and it can only take
24 hours after the eggs are laid until maggots emerge. Uncovered
bins inside the kitchen can also allow flies to lay eggs on waste
food.
• Squeeze the air out of bags used to contain food waste, etc before
they are tied and put in the bin. The lack of air should reduce smells
along with slowing down general decomposition and help slow down
any maggot development.
• Do not leave dog/cat food uncovered, again flies can lay their eggs
in it.
• Maggots will only appear in the bin if the eggs have been laid in a
suitable food source for them to develop. If bins are kept closed,
flies should not be able to enter to lay their eggs especially if it is
properly wrapped when put in the bin.
• It has also been suggested that solid waste from nappies are
emptied in the toilet before being double bagged and put in the bin.
Real nappies such as ‘Terry Towels’ are recommended as they are
much more eco friendly and will reduce the amount of waste in the
bin.
• There is no evidence of any known adverse health effects as a
result of a two weekly refuse collection. One Council had consulted
their Medical Officer for Health who checked their records. These
showed no indication of an increase in gastro-intestinal disease
following the change to a two weekly collection. There is no proven
research that links refuse with ill health in our modern society.
• Preventing flies laying eggs on a suitable food source, is the best
way of preventing maggots and hence the need to practise strict
control over hygiene. Flies are all around no matter what type of
collection service is in operation. Maggots in wheelie bins will not
cause any health problems.
• Wheeled bins are much better for protecting the contents from cats,
dogs, foxes etc.
• Cleaning the bin and the use of insecticides / fly sprays will reduce
the problem.

You really made me laugh with your poem. Thanks.
Perhaps I can make you laugh?
When the bin men didn't empty my bin they said that I didn't leave it at the kerb.
We haven't got a kerb next to our house!
Alright so it wasn't very funny. Not to me it wasn't.
Something nobody seems to care about is health and safety which the council are always talking about but bins left at the roadside constitute a hazard because children hide behind them and drivers don't know that they are there. Children then act impulsively and run out into the road which is an accident waiting to happen. Even when bins are on the footpath they sometimes cause a hazard because pedestrians with prams or electric scooters have to go into the road to get past the bins.
I think that taxes increase in proportion with services getting worse.

There is a direct significant correlation between residents who don't do the right things with bins, doing the opposite to guidelines and the small incidences of maggots.

Maximise Recycling/Composting; you don't get the same risk maggot problems. Campaign for a weekly food waste kitchen caddy collection if you can't compost YOUR food waste. (Flatdwellers, terracedwellers etc)
http://www2.letsrecycle.com/do/ecco.py/view_item?listid=37&listcatid=217&listitemid=52109§ion=composting
Food waste to energy, compost to farmers and food production; this is the answer and common sense vision.
Folks who get maggots in their bins and then whinge over their own maggots, lead maggoty bin practices themselves. They are back end thinkers; not folks with vision.
Voting for retrograde weekly wasting collections is stopping money going to future food waste collection and efficient benefits; its obvious!

TARA GREAVES
03 July 2009 07:00
Council bosses in Norwich pledged to continue with fortnightly bin
collections today despite schemes being abandoned elsewhere because of
a surge in flies and maggots during the heatwave.
City
officials said they had not received any complaints about the issue
while in Broadland, a council spokesman said there had been a handful
of callers concerned about maggots in bins.
Several town halls
in other parts of the country have scrapped fortnightly collections and
returned to weekly ones, while others, such as Hertsmere Borough
Council in Hertfordshire, have agreed to reinstate weekly pick-ups if
temperatures soar above 30C for five consecutive days.
But in
this area residents were urged to take greater care of how they dealt
with rotting waste in a bid to head off problems before they start.
A
spokeswoman for Norwich City Council said: “We have no plans to look at
fortnightly collections. We haven't noticed anything unusual for this
time of year and we haven't had any complaints.”
The current
sunny spell is the hottest since July 2006, with Wednesday seeing the
highest temperatures of the year so far at 31.8C (89.2F).
Peter
Stockwell, service development manager for GYB Services, which works in
partnership with Yarmouth Council in a number of areas, including waste
collection, said: “Fortnightly collections are a very effective method
and it is used widely in Europe and they do not have any problems,
despite having a climate that is much hotter than our own.
“If
the lid is kept closed there shouldn't be any problems with blue
bottles or the resulting maggots and if people double wrap things that
are likely to attract such beasts, like fish, then everything should be
ok.”
The message was reiterated by Andy Jarvis, Broadland
Council's head of environmental services, who said that the recession
had resulted in a drop in waste collected from the end of last year.
But
a resident of Norwich's Golden Triangle, where the introduction of
fortnightly collections has led to black and blue bins lining the
streets, said: “You walk along the street and you can actually smell
people's bins. Two weeks is too long for rubbish to stand there no
matter how many times you wrap it up.”

TARA GREAVES 03 July 2009 07:00
Council bosses in Norwich pledged to continue with fortnightly bin collections today despite schemes being abandoned elsewhere because of a surge in flies and maggots during the heatwave.
City officials said they had not received any complaints about the issue while in Broadland, a council spokesman said there had been a handful of callers concerned about maggots in bins.
Several town halls in other parts of the country have scrapped fortnightly collections and returned to weekly ones, while others, such as Hertsmere Borough Council in Hertfordshire, have agreed to reinstate weekly pick-ups if temperatures soar above 30C for five consecutive days.
But in this area residents were urged to take greater care of how they dealt with rotting waste in a bid to head off problems before they start.
A spokeswoman for Norwich City Council said: “We have no plans to look at fortnightly collections. We haven't noticed anything unusual for this time of year and we haven't had any complaints.”
The current sunny spell is the hottest since July 2006, with Wednesday seeing the highest temperatures of the year so far at 31.8C (89.2F).
Peter Stockwell, service development manager for GYB Services, which works in partnership with Yarmouth Council in a number of areas, including waste collection, said: “Fortnightly collections are a very effective method and it is used widely in Europe and they do not have any problems, despite having a climate that is much hotter than our own.
“If the lid is kept closed there shouldn't be any problems with blue bottles or the resulting maggots and if people double wrap things that are likely to attract such beasts, like fish, then everything should be ok.”
The message was reiterated by Andy Jarvis, Broadland Council's head of environmental services, who said that the recession had resulted in a drop in waste collected from the end of last year.
But a resident of Norwich's Golden Triangle, where the introduction of fortnightly collections has led to black and blue bins lining the streets, said: “You walk along the street and you can actually smell people's bins. Two weeks is too long for rubbish to stand there no matter how many times you wrap it up.”

So NO COMPLAINTS mad, I fail to see your point. Like last year, same period, NO problems here at the BlueGreen premise/blue bin. It's all scaremongering on your part....its an issue within substance...as usual might I add. |

Its a lie by NCC, loads of people have rang the council, regards too maggot infestation. Due to the fact that employees who answer phones. Have been instructed by higher powers to fob the complaints off. If I have anymore of the buggers (maggots) in bins, I get the wife to round em up, and release the maggots in city hall. I think the snot rags will pose more of health hazard , in fact I will email brown pants, once swine flu starts killing old folk en mass, how 3rd world bin emptying, keeps the virus spreading.

Of course I can't, but the chap I spoke too about maggots last year via blower. Admitted that staff had been warned and informed of maggot issues. Its not a health hazard and not a lot the council can do. When I asked if he could show me evidence that maggots and flies, would not pose a health problem for my family, he shied away. I then bullied him more, if I could have it in writing. At this point I was cut off, I should imagine that this call is in their training purpose program, as it was recorded. This is why city hall will have any maggots, that turn-up in my bin. If the wiggly one's cause city hall, to shut up shop for a while..........Then we know they lie. The snot rags or even that terrible sad fire, could force councils to u-turn on storing to much crap, near homes. Health hazard, Virus hazard.worst of all .....a fire hazard..........All because of EU ballacks.
