It's all been happening
You might normally associate rumours of match fixing in football games, occasionally it crops up in a few other sports, but now speedway has come under investigation. This weeks Speedway Star is full of it. It doesn't show the sport in a good light at all.
Poole Pirates are being investigated after serious allegations made by fans and promoters writing on speedway internet forums. It is said that the Poole riders dropped points on purpose in their 56-39 defeat at Swindon on May 7th. Other meetings are also being looked at after a run of unusual results.
Coventry are also getting bad press, they made the decision to track a team which had not been approved by the BSPA. This came about after Scott Nicholls was brought in as rider replacement for a month as Coventry have injury problems. The team are now riding with an unfair advantage over the other teams. Should Nicholls be refused permission to ride with Coventry, Ipswich would be interested in having him ride for them. Ipswich have not started the season very well, having Nicholls would help them a great deal.
I should imagine everything will now be looked at and sorted out as quickly as possible, as these allegations do the sport no favours at all.
As far as Poole Pirates are concerned, I really hope there is no truth in the allegations. We shall see. As for Coventry, yes I can understand how other teams feel about the situation. I for one would love to see Scotty back at Ipswich for a while. I may even take myself to Ipswich for a meeting should this be the case. It's been a while since I was last there.
