Pale and interesting

« Back to index

I have very pale skin that burns if I go out in the sun and never tans. I’ve seen many bronzed make up looks on the beauty counters in the city, but bronzers always make my complexion look muddy. Is their an alternative?

Charles says: Pale skin never really looks fresh and dressed up in layers of bronzer as some skins won’t naturally tan, so bronzer will tend to look muddy and unclean.

    But there is an alternative.

Fashion has also taken on a little inspiration from the fifties where makeup was pale and interesting. Think Elizabeth Taylor in the 50s.

It’s a look that we at Charles Gillman Cosmetics have adopted for the summer. We’ve called it Dolled Up.

To create the look I would use a lightweight foundation with a high SPF as the base. As the base is neutral and matches your skin tone you can use colour to enhance your features.

For the Dolled Up look I use a bold red lip colour to make a statement with the lips.

For the eyes I use cool natural tones, a gel eye liner to define the eyes and two coats of mascara.

For the cheeks I used a subtle brush of pink or peach blusher to create a flush of colour on the skin. This makes pale skins look like they have caught a bit of sun. The look is about confidence and colour. Who said pale skin is boring!

My inspiration for the Dolled Up look

The new season was approaching and it was time for me to get thinking about the summer collection we were going to create at Charles Gillman cosmetics. We had covered so many subjects, that my inspiration for something new was a little harder to find!

My mother had come to visit and was looking for an assortment of trinkets and all things old to dress up her new home she was currently renovating.

We stumbled across an old antique store right in the middle of the city, which I had never discovered.

Whilst she was hunting high and low, I found myself sat down at an old desk, on the desk was an assortment of things that were slightly old and slightly dog-eared, then I found an old magazine that dated back to the fifties with a picture of Elizabeth Taylor on the front cover. Unlike our magazines today, it was simple, stylish and natural.

The front cover screamed that it was proud of pale skin and bold lips, if we saw this on a magazine today it would probably have a rather large and magnified circle on all her flaws for everyone to tare apart!

I thought about how everyone likes to look sun kissed for the summer, layering up the fake tan and getting through bronzer like there’s no tomorrow. But looking at the magazine cover at the flawless pale skin I thought about what was really on the market for this.

    Welcome to Dolled Up!
