ICE and incineration
The Institution of Civil Engineers [ICE], of which I've been a corporate member since 1976, is pro-incineration and yet refuses to examine any health effects as they will be able to confirm when re-reading correspondence I've had with them.
I've recently learnt that the News of the World had a major article "Is anybody safe?" by Nadia Cohen, [13 February 2000] which named & shamed the ten most polluting industries in the UK.
SELCHP [the Deptford-based incinerator] was one of the ten shamed by NoW and the following quote was attributed to Peter Gerstrom: "We work to high environmental standards and are fully in compliance with regulations."
Peter Gerstrom has apparently worked for Cleanaway, Onyx, Hampshire Waste Services - and is now a Director of Waste at the Institution of Civil Engineers and presumably responsible for their pro-incineration stance.
ICE is a learned society that is forbidden to have commercial interests by the terms of its Royal Charter. I have alerted ICE to the known and provable hazards of industrial PM2.5 emissions from incinerators and other sources and have correspondence to prove it.
As Peter Gerstrom is such an expert on incinerators, perhaps he'll be brave enough to speak at a public meeting in Norwich with Dr Dick van Steenis and myself.
ICE should have been the first in the UK to advocate plasma-gasification as the safest method of disposing of waste and yet they have shunned that method. Perhaps an ICE spokesperson will tell the Norwich Evening News why plasma-gasification is good enough to be used elsewhere in the world, but not here?
Kind regards,
