Good god it amazes me how the subject of a 14 year old looking for a job has turned into a slagging match about his spelling, etc. Theres no relevance as too how the lad spells, to him trying to find a job, personally id say well done for at least trying to find a job unlike many people of that age. I only came on here to get tips on how to find a job and i ended up getting an english tutorial off of a sad old man. So long Kenneth, and i hope you finally realise how pathetic you have been. So have a good life and don't bother any other kids. I can get over things like this easily, but other kids already have no confidence, without you pushing them over the edge. It is important for a teen to get a job so he can become responsible and start taking care of his own money and saving up. We also need an income, not all parents will buy a kid everything they need. There are at least 5 basic mistakes in her 3 lines of text. If she thinks this is not important she should think again. It doesn't convey a good impression to prospective employers if these sort of basic mistakes are evident in job applications, especially if the job involves contact with the public. It is OK to make use of spell checkers and grammar checkers in word processors - we all make typing errors -  but they are not infallible, especially the grammar checkers, so a basic knowledge of spelling, punctuation and grammar is important, as a properly laid out, correctly spelled and punctuated document conveys a much better impression than a scruffy, poorly spelled document with little punctuation. And there are times when a document has to be hand written, but that's another story! And before anyone tells me, it is now perfectly acceptable to start a sentence with 'And' something which was a definite 'No-No' when I was at school.     Report

BT, I don't disagree that spelling and grammar are importnant but you yourself admit that the 'rules' change over time! There is clearly a time and a place for the application of 'proper' spelling, punctuation and grammar but I think generally there is consensus that the online world is slightly different and slightly more informal where the 'rules' are different! Amongst the under 30s in particular there is whole different language that operates with email, texting, forums and online messaging! This however is perfectly consistent with the evolution of language over time. I doubt anyone on this board enquiring about the availability of jobs for teenagers where applying to be editors of the English Dictionary!!!    Report

Perhaps BT should pay a little more attention to being positive and supportive, rather than the easy position of a critic. My previous comment addressed a possibility for teenagers to obtain local work. It is refreshing and admirable that young people express a desire to work and earn their own income. The English issue is a totally different matter. BT's message could be scrutinised for its convolution, disjointedness and neglect of the use of plain English. This would be a area for pointless debate. Perhaps a potential employer would be more impressed by the enthusiasm and motivation for work of a young person. Certainly if a young person came to weed my garden for a little holiday money, whilst appreciating competant English skills, I would prefer other qualities like stamina, dexterity, honesty, plant knowledge and friendliness.     Report

In reply to BT`s comments i am not a 15 year old, and am actually a university student and am 27, i would also like to point out that you seem to missing the point, this subject was brought up by a young lad looking for work not someone looking to get slated by stuck up people who seem to think that the most important think in the world is that people have made typos and possible spelling mistakes, big deal, this is a discussion forum not an exam.So i suggest you get over you spelling and grammar problems which you seem to have and look at the real reason of this subject.      Report

As a parent of three daughters, each of whom has passed GCSE and A level exams, I take exception to your attitude towards these.  My girls worked extremely hard to obtain these awards and I will not stand by and see them belittled in this manner.  I went to City College at the age of 49 to take GCSE exams and have nothing but respect for the young people who have to study for these at an age where they have so little life expereince to draw from and not much encouragment from the "GREY" brigade who all had to "work harder at a younger age" Just try to remember that we had a lot more going for us in the boom years when jobs were plentiful and skills were rewarded instead of sneered at" src="/cs/emoticons/emotion-9.gif">    Report

Dave, generally you are correct, but specifically 14-15 can take their GCSE's at 14 or 15. As a teacher I can tell you this. Currently pupils are taking their GCSE exams last week for the pilot Geography GCSE, aged 15. Next year this same course and exam will be open to 25% of Yr 9, age 14.    Report

Isn't this a case of using language suitable for the given situation.  Where abbreviation may be very acceptable in texting or social use of e mails, in business eg employment, administration and interaction between companies, it is not. If a young person approaches a company for employment, expecting it to change or make allowances for them because it is the way they speak to their peers, they will be in for a shock as for most of the population, you start at the bottom and work your way up.  When you have made it and own your own company then you can start using any form of the language you choose. Beware though, not all customers may have the same viewpoint as you and they all spend money to keep a company viable. Sarcasm, used effectively against your peers and parents will also be very effective in showing you the door at work and the way to the job centre. MacDonalds require job applications to be filled in, just the same as anywhere else and there are job opportunities with them to progress to management by showing initiative and ability. Do not think qualifications will guarantee you a job at the end of a degree course as there are many graduates out there competing for jobs. The employment laws for young people are very strict to combat exploitation but also have the reverse effect which reduces job openings because employers do not want the bother of having to comply, when an older worker is available for the same job. So, my advice is to comply with the norm in job seeking.  Use the correct form of language expected, be interested in the position and company you are applying to, do not dress in clothes better found in a nightclub, be yourself and let your natural self shine through.  Then go home and text all your friends    Report
