Puppet man.

Is Puppet Man an asset to the Norwich scene or just another beggar scrounging from kind hearted people?

As in the man who stands on Gentleman's Walk?  As far as I was aware, it has always been each individual's choice, as to whether they give him money; do you have an issue with this?  He is one of the colourful characters known to the people of Norwich, rather like Marigold, who, in my view, does no harm to anyone.  What do you mean by "asset"?

Re: Puppet man.

I didn't go into the city today so I didn't see the Puppet Man but he tends to make me laugh!     Last time I saw him he was doing his "Elvis" act - looking nothing like Elvis of course but he was wearing a black wig!

Er, is he doing a Santa impression yet?

I think of him as one of Norwich's characters who people, in the future, will remember with fondness - such as Marigold and the like.

Re: Puppet man.

I would see him more as an asset than a beggar in Norwich. He's one of life's great eccentrics and he means no harm, bless him. Mind, I have never actually noticed any 'money plate' with him whenever I've walked past. Hmmm...

Stan, your use of the phrase "scrounging from kind-hearted people" suggests that "Puppet Man" is stealing money from unknowing, kind citizens. Whether you think his act is worthy of pepole's money or not, it is their decision as to whether they give their money to him, and I'm wondering why you have even brought this point up. It seems angled towards a jibe at the guy, which I think is pretty unfair.

It would be another matter if he was invasively bullying people into giving money, but he is not. As it goes, I did once hear that any collections from his act were donated to charity, although I don't know how much truth is in that.

In any case, if anyone wants to give some loose change to someone whom they find entertaining in the street, then it's entirely up to them, and there is certainly no case of the person "scrounging" whatsoever.

Slightly off topic but in case no one has heard of him there is a great guy who goes under the name of "Normal for Norfolk". He has a website
http://www.myspace.com/normalfornorfolk

He wrote a song called "I had a 12 month affair with the Norwich Puppet Man" available on CD.

Many Thanks

Sad [:(] Re: Puppet man.

Hi, i think youll find if you delve deep, that these "eccentrics" have been through very traumatic life events which have been so awful, they have been turned around  and this is how they cope. I really feel sorry for them. Again i will say its a shame the mental health services are so abysmal. I myself havent worked for 5years now. Only now have i finally gotten referred for counselling, to a drop in womens centre which im having to pay for sessions.... where the heck is the nhs? I could have been back to work years ago.

These colourful characters are a sad reminder of how little help there is out there
