Voting at the council election.

Voting at the council election.

Will it change anything if I vote?

Many councillors are so full of promises at election time but if they are elected we seldom see in the newspapers what they have changed!

I think that we need a web site that we can post to when we see something that needs doing.  A local government officer or councillor could then answer any sensible postings and say what was going to be done.

For a start many drains  never seem to be cleared and many pavements are broken and dangerous.  Grass verges are in a bad state but councillors seem afraid  that if they say or do anything they will alienate car owners who cause the problems.

Should not our wardens be noticing these problems and reporting them together with hedges that are growing over the footpath.

Will my voting change any of the things that I have mentioned?

It certainly won't change anything if you don't vote.

Its my contention that if you don't vote you have no complaint. There's no point not voting and then spending the next 4/5 years complaining about the Council/Government.

Turnout at Local Elections is typically less than 30%, and turn out at General elections has fallen from 84% in 1950 to 61% in 2005.

See here  http://www.psr.keele.ac.uk/area/uk/turnout.htm

So particularly in the Local elections you can make a difference, but it needs a lot more people to use their vote, and then perhaps things can be changed.

Have you tried speaking you your local counillor? If you don`t tell them then they don`t know about the problems. Certain things like drains and broken pavements are the responsibility of the council so it needs to be reported.
