Daniel Powter at the UEA
09 June 2006
Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Powter is a classically trained musician who has successfully crossed over to produce driving melodies, infectious pop songs and delicate ballads that have proved a hit internationally.
He turned to the piano and pop song-writing after being thwarted by dyslexia in his childhood quest to become a classical violinist. And no doubt he's now not regretting the decision.
His first single, Bad Day, became a huge hit across Europe after it was used on an advert for Coca Cola.
It made it to number two in the UK, number one in Germany and went top five around the world.
His eponymous album, full of radio friendly, piano driven adult pop, has echoes of soft rock acts such as Coldplay, Maroon 5 and Gavin DeGraw.
Debuting in the top five of the UK charts, it has since gone platinum, delivering another single, Free Loop, in the process.
His popularity in the UK doesn't yet quite match his chart-topping exploits in the US, Australia and Europe, hence he's appearing at mid-sized venues like the UEA, rather than the arena circuit, but it is probably only a matter of time.
