Former world racing champ Jacques Villeneuve had lunch at a Norfolk pub a few miles away from Lotus's headquarters today - sparking more speculation that he could drive for the company.

The Canadian who won the 1997 Formula 1 World Championship enjoyed a fillet steak in the company of a Lotus executive at the Bird in Hand pub in Wreningham.

Pub manageress Lizzie Brake said: “We weren't expecting him so it was quite a surprise. We all got his autographs. He was here for about one and a half hours, and we think he left to go back to Lotus.

“He was with another Canadian, an American and a lady from Lotus.”

Outside of Formula One, Mr Villeneuve has taken on several new careers including releasing one album titled 'Private Paradise'.
