A ghoulish advert promoting tours of Norwich's haunted hotspots were blocked by council officials – for being too scary.
Dave Chisnell runs the Evening News-sponsored City Ghost and Horror Walks, which get under
way for the new season next Tuesday.
As part of the launch of this year's walks he had been hoping to adorn a city cab with spooky images which he created with taxi owner Les Keane.
But when they took their artwork to Norwich City Council for approval, they were baffled to hear that one of the images was just too freaky to be seen on the city streets.
As a result the pictures had to be hastily re-designed and a compromise was reached with the council.
Mr Chisnell said: “The council told us that they felt the picture we had lined up for the bonnet of the taxi was so scary that it would frighten children.
“They also said that if somebody glanced in their rear view mirror and saw the picture, it could cause them to panic and crash.
“I wouldn't mind so much but it was a picture of me that was going on the bonnet.”
Ironically, City Ghost and Horror Walks has been allowed to enter frightening floats into the Lord Mayor's Procession twice and has won first prize both times.
However, Mr Chisnell has remained philosophical about his disagreement with City Hall.
“We've always had a great relationship with the council and we certainly won't be letting this decision affect that,” he said.
“In fact I suppose it's a bit of a compliment to be told we're too scary, after all that's what we're supposed to be all about.”
Taxi driver Mr Keane said: “I was really surprised when the council turned down the advert for the ghost walk. I suppose it is a bit different to the usual things you see on the side of a cab, but it's just a bit of fun isn't it?”
Sara Martinez, council spokeswoman, said: “When making a decision on an application we must take into consideration the impact that any imagery may have on the public. If we feel that the image is likely to cause offence then we work with the applicant to find an alternative.”
Three years ago the council told bosses at Sinsin's Lovestore in Norwich to tone down an advert they wanted to place on the side of a rainbow coloured Hackney cab.
Ü This year's ghost walks start next Tuesday and run Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from the Adam and Eve public house on Bishopgate at 7.30pm until Thursday, September 28. More details can be obtained from Mr Chisnell on (01953) 607262.
