Debate over UFO claim
11 July 2009 08:06
A debate has started over what an orange light spotted in the sky could have been.
The Evening News this week received reports of a “big ball of orange light” which was spotted over Norwich at about 10.25pm on July 7.
Some people have said the light must have been a Chinese lantern while those who saw it think otherwise.
Belinda Walker, who lives in the Golden Triangle, Norwich, said: “I too saw an orange light on Saturday night. It was straight overhead going towards the city centre, very fast, seemed very high in the sky and silent.
“My husband thinks it was a Chinese lantern, lots of examples of these are on YouTube, but I'm not very convinced as we have seen one of these lanterns before and the orange light I saw on Saturday was quite different.”
As previously reported, Sarah Browne, who first contacted the paper after spotting the light, described the light as being “silent” with no aircraft noise, smoke or trail.
Trudy Gray, who lives near Aylsham, said she had seen a similar light the Tuesday before at about the same time. She said: “It was a continuous orange light, quite high up, going in straight line with no sound, no nothing.”
Hayley Howes said: “The orange light shining in the sky was probably a Chinese lantern. These are very popular now in the UK and people use them when celebrating birthdays, weddings.
“They stand about 6ft tall and are lit with tea-lights, they can rise hundreds of feet in the sky and they look like flame balls. They are most common in China and Thailand and used for wedding celebrations.”
Arron Randall said: “I saw this light over the city and it was a sky lantern. We released some ourselves a month or so back for our wedding and people then reported it was a UFO. It makes you laugh when you know what it is.”
