Emergency services were called to the Mall Norwich this evening amid reports that a woman had either jumped or fallen from one of the upper floors.

Paramedics were working to put the woman into a brace after she landed on the ground floor within feet of Santa's Grotto.

Police community support officers and Mall security staff stopped and sealed off some of the escalators in the area to stop shoppers from coming across the distressing scene.

It is understood the incident happened at about 4.30pm. Staff from nearby shops said they heard “a piercing scream and a thud”. One woman, who did not want to be named, said: “It was absolutely horrible. We think someone may have fallen off an escalator, but we have no idea how it could have happened.”

Shopping and trading continued in other parts of the city centre complex, with visitors apparently unaware of the drama unfolding around the corner.
