Click to see Kane's video Diary
Chris checks Kane's backswing Under the Potter microscope this week is 10-year-old Kane Sawyer.
Kane has a very solid golf swing without any serious flaws consequently he is very consistent from tee to green. The one area, however, that we feel might need some polishing is his backswing.
The fault we are looking at is that at the top of the swing. If you look at the left figure his left shoulder has dropped slightly and his right side has collapsed – by this we mean moved to the right, which will tend to cause Kane to lose power rather than any real bad shots.
What we would like to see Kane do more is to keep his left shoulder higher and resist more with his right leg with the right hip moving backwards rather than sideways. This will give him more coil and consequently more power. The feeling we are looking for is the upper body coiling around the lower body (right picture).
The one big quality that Kane possesses which is unusual in junior golfers is that he takes great care to get his set-up spot on each time – most kids this age will have hit two or three shots in the time it takes Kane to hit one. Kane’s handicap should tumble this year.
