The Railways of Norfolk is a special magazine published by the Evening News, following the progress of the railways as they steamed across Norfolk. The story starts back in 1834 when pioneering businessmen first spoke about a Grand Eastern Counties Railway to link the flatlands of Norfolk with the rest of the country. The scheme faltered but the seeds were sown and a few years later the famous Stephensons announced a bold plan to build a railway between Norwich and Great Yarmouth. It opened on May 1 1844 — and there was no going back. Norwich had three railway stations — Thorpe, City and Victoria — serving towns and villages across the county and beyond. And of course they brought in thousands of holidaymakers makers to the coastal resorts including Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Sheringham and Cromer. The magazine looks at the rise and fall of the railways in Norfolk — from steam to diesel and electric — and investigates what the future holds. It is packed with pictures and memories and takes a look behind the platform, concentrating on the people who worked on the railways. And it is brought to life by dozens of rare photographs from the Archant library, Evening News readers and private collections, showing how our county was changed forever. The magazine has been has been produced to celebrate the golden anniversary of the Norfolk Railway Society.
