A probe into the deaths of a Norwich couple in a motorcycle crash in Spain is awaiting reports from authorities overseas.

Kieron and Sharron Haines, 68 and 65 respectively, died on the A-8 motorway near the resort town of Llanes after they were involved in a crash with a lorry.

The married couple, from Hellesdon, are reported to have been killed instantly following the collision, which happened just east of Oviedo on September 11.

Reports at the time suggest that the couple came off their bike during heavy rain on the Spanish motorway and were hit by following vehicles.

Inquests into their deaths were opened at Norfolk Coroner's Court in October, a month after they died, and were adjourned.

But this week, the court heard that the cases are not yet ready for full inquests, due to investigations still being ongoing abroad.

During a short hearing, area coroner Samantha Goward said: "We are awaiting further evidence from authorities in Spain following their investigations.

"The matter is therefore not ready for inquest."

Following the crash, a spokesman for Spain's Civil Guard said the pair were killed "when they crossed over a road line and the motorcycle skidded".

The spokesman added: "They were heading west in the direction of the provincial capital Oviedo when the motorbike they were on overturned for reasons which are still being investigated.

"They both fell and were hit by a truck, dying instantly."

It is reported Mr and Hrs Haines had celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary last year.

They were both keen motorcyclists and had an allotment together in Hellesdon, while Mr Haines was also an enthusiastic beekeeper.

Tributes were paid following their deaths by fellow members of the Hellesdon community.

Mrs Goward adjourned the case for a further pre-inquest review hearing, which is due to be held on Friday, May 31.
