It may have been a wet and windy day but plenty of people still turned out to enjoy some free ice cream in the city centre this afternoon.

Ben and Jerry's has been celebrating its tradition Free Cone Day at locations around the world today, including outside Chantry Place shopping centre.

Two of the staff serving the iced treats - ironically both named Ben - said the chocolatey Phish Food flavour was "most certainly" the most popular.

Dozens have been queuing throughout the afternoon, at lunchtime in particular.

The first ever Free Cone Day took place in 1979 in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont., in the US.

From there, it has taken place all across the world, from New York to London and now in Norwich, as the brand has grown globally.

Last year the initiative returned for the first time since the pandemic and an estimated 970,000 scoops were served, with Ben and Jerry's aiming to break the one million mark this year.

It's not too late to get your free scoop either, as the pop-up stall is open until 8pm.
